Reading and Phonics- In reading we are working on unit 3 in
Superkids. We have been working with the following letter- sound correlations:
ang,
ing,
ong,
ung,
ble,
dle,
gle,
kle,
tle, and
zle. We will be learning about contractions as part of our Memory Words for units 3 and 4: can't, didn't, hasn't, isn't, do, have, show, how, me, a. In addition to journal writing we are also starting to Write stories about what we would do with 100 pumpkins of our very own. We are learning to start with a
prewrite, and following with first drafts, editing, and then publishing. In our reading groups we are reading a variety of stories, playing phonics games, working with comprehension, and sequencing events. We all have enjoyed the small groups! We are lucky to have Mrs. Cunningham, our Reading Specialist working with all of us. She takes all of the kids at times for small group instruction for review as well as extension activities.
Math- In math we are working with word problems, ones and tens, making pictures to problem solve, ordinal positions,
geometry, patterns, and the doubles. We are learning the facts 0+0 through 10+10. you will be finding fact practice sheets in addition to the math lesson pages beginning next week! Through repetition and hands on work the students will have their facts committed to memory! I will be sending home mini sets of addition flashcards for your child to practice as we cover specific facts in class.
Science- In science we are wrapping up our studies of habitats this week. The class has been working on habitat books which they will be sharing with their families at the end of this week. We are all so excited about the projects due on Friday! I can't wait to see them. Our next unit will be the states of matter.
Social Studies- In social
studies we have been learning about goods and services, basic needs, neighborhoods, and neighborhood workers. We have been working with our
Nystrom social studies neighborhood maps recently. We will continue to
work with maps and globes through the holidays. We are also learning about cardinal direction, map scales, and map keys.
Religion- Our class will be
participating in an All
Saints' Day celebration on November 3rd with the other two 1st grade classes in our team. I will be sending home information about a saints project this Friday. We will be making our projects in class, but the children will be gathering some saint information outside of our class. Our class has been attending Mass every Tuesday morning. They are attentive and making me proud! Some of the
parishioners who attend daily Mass have been very complimentary of the children as well. Our
present units are about the Holy Family. We will learn about praying the Rosary this month as well.
OTHER NEWS-
- Parent Conference appointment reminders will be sent home this week.
-Many thanks to our homeroom parents- Mrs.
Mannix and Dr.
DeFazio. They will be helping me to coordinate class parties and special events with our class.
-Mrs. Collins has offered to coordinate Guest Readers in our class. I am looking forward to having many guest come on in to read to the class this year. I
anticipate that this will begin in January. More information about signing up will be coming soon.

boxes and water bottles are marked with their name. Thanks in advance!
-We will be having some special pumpkin activities in our class on Friday, 10/31 at 1:15. If you would like to come in to help with a group please let me know if you are available.
- Scholastic Book orders will be going out for the months of November and December this week. The due date to order is, Wednesday, 10/22. I can be sure to conceal books if you wish to buy some for Christmas gifts. Please make all checks
