June 7th Update

It has started to rain, but the good news is that we were able to fit in all of the field day events by lunch time. We had a blast! I am sure that you will hear all about it tonight.

Next week (week of June 11th) we will be doing special thematic events as a whole first grade class. The children will be having SUPERKIDS Day on the day of our party, 6/15. We are so excited about having the chance to dress out of uniform as our favorite Superkid! They may also bring small props or accessories. I am sure that your children will have no trouble telling you about the favorites, and what they like. Please keep in mind that if your child doesn't chose to dress, then they will need to wear their gym uniform.

As you know, on June 15th we will be having our end of the year celebration as a whole first grade class. Thank you all so very much for signing up for things for our party. As long as we have sunshine, families are invited to join us on the field. The children will be having a scavenger hunt at 9:00 am when we will be "hunting" in teams with friends from 1A and 1B. Our party will continue until 11:00.

Please Note:

June 15th: Class Party/ SUPERKIDS Day
    *Please bring a beach towel to school today.

June 18th: Clean Up Day
    *Please bring an empty backpack to school as well as some plastic grocery bags.

June 19th: Half- Day
     * Dismissal is at 11:45.

If your child is not going to be in school on the 18th and 19th please let me know ahead of time.

- A friendly reminder that spring picture packets or payments need to be returned to school as soon as possible

- This week will be our last week of homework and spelling tests!

- Field Day is on Thursday, June 7th. Please be sure that your child is wearing their gym shorts and a yellow shirt.
Please apply sunscreen in the morning before school and provide your child with a labeled water bottle.

- The Parent Guild is seeking donations to be used for buying Popsicles and water for the kids on Field Day. Please
Send donations in a marked envelope.

- Our end of the school year party will be on Friday, June 15th at 9:00 am. Hopefully, the weather will be
beautiful. All are welcome to attend, if we are able to have it outside. Homeroom parents will be letting you
know what is needed for the event.

- Monday, June 18th will be "Bag and Rag Day"! We will be cleaning and sending home many items!

- Tuesday, June 19th we will enjoy the half day together!

* Please let me know if your child will not be in school on June 18 and 19th so that I can have them take home their school items early.

May News

Hello 1C Families, We have been super busy! Here is what we have been up to!

 In SUPERKIDS we are working on unit 5 in More Adventures. Skills for this unit include reading and writing words with r- controlled vowels: ar, er, ir, or, ur. We are also learning about synonyms and homophones. We have had lots of fun writing poems with verbs and adjectives recently. Memory words for this unit and unit 6 include: cold, know, does, laugh, both, again, kind, buy, find, right, wash, and light.


 In Science we are having a great time watching the ladybug and butterfly life cycles right before our eyes. We are journaling their changes and look forward to welcoming our new friends in the coming weeks. In science we are also learning about classifying bugs vs. insects. The children are doing excellent work with highlighting, labeling, and illustrating in their journals.


 In Social Studies we have been learning about the USA. We have enjoyed learning about some basic geography, direction, map keys and understanding symbols on a map key. Learning about US symbols was a great experience. I hope that you had a chance to check out our artwork of US Symbols in my last post. We are starting to work on our new world atlases. The children will be making their own atlases of the 7 continents to keep. We will also read about the continents in our Nystrom atlases.


In Math We are working on the following concepts: subtracting a number from 10, dozen and half- dozen, estimating distances, reviewing all coins and counting coins/bills. We will also be drawing line segments to specific lengths in inches, studying congruent and noncongruent shapes, and ordering events according to time. Our class is also starting "Math Minutes" which will give them a chance to climb the ladder when they show mastery of addition and subtraction facts. The children will move up the ladder at their own pace and spend extra time on facts that may be a challenge to them.

In Religion We have been learning about the season of Easter, followed by the Ascension and the upcoming Pentecost. In our book we are also working on chapter 8, We Give Thanks to God and moving ahead to God's Son Jesus. Important words for these chapters include: Lord's Prayer, hallowed, Angel, Mary, Savior.


Looking Ahead:
- Field Day is on June 7th all day! The kids in our class are asked to wear a yellow tshirt with their gym uniform shorts and sneakers. Coach D is also looking for parent volunteers for the day, morning, or afternoon. Popsicle and small water donations are also appreciated.


- During the week of June 11th we will have some special events with the whole first grade. Plan ahead! The children will be able to dress up as their favorite SUPERKID! This is a big tradition for the first graders! Start to talk with your child about who their favorite it. What are they interested in? What might they wear to show that they know all about their favorite?  More details will be coming soon.

One, Two I Can Tie My Shoes!

Hello 1C Families!

I hope that you all had a great long vacation. It was wonderful to see the kids once again this morning. The classroom is a-buzz will tales about vacation and chit chat about what is new and exciting.

I had a great time at NCEA in Boston. I had the opportunity to learn about curriculum and enjoy spiritual enrichment. It was so inspiring to listen to other Catholic educators/ administrators and to learn about great things happening all across the nation. What a wonderful opportunity it was.

* Spring pictures will be take on Thursday, 4/26. Please check the weekly news on the school website for more information.

* On Friday, 4/27 we will celebrate the 100th Anniversary of Fenway Park. The children may participate in  a Red Sox spirit day by wearing baseball tshirts. Please note that the children may wear a tshirt for their favorite team or red, white, and blue. Please be sure to send in a $1.00 donation to participate.

* We will be making some projects using recycled materials. I would appreciate it if the children could please bring in recyclable greeting cards for Thursday, 4/26. Please cut the cards on the fold and send in the front panel. The cards will be cut up, so any picture or design is fine.

Hello and Happy SPRING!

Hello 1C Families,
 Thank you for sending in the goodies for our green fruit salad last week. We really enjoyed it and it was a nice way to kick off our St Patrick's Day fun.


   Tomorrow is the annual St. Bernadette School Walk- a Thon! The children may wear their summer gym uniforms. Please be sure that your child brings in a water bottle with their name on it. It is going to be another beautiful, warm day. Please refer to the Walk-a- Thon paperwork sent home earlier this month for specifics. All fund raised go directly to improving and building our technology components. Thanks for your support.


   Arts Night is this Friday, March 23rd. The children have made amazing artwork with Mrs. Lapolito and it is their chance to shine. If you have not been to Arts Night, you will be amazed by the art displayed throughout the main building. Also, Mrs. Clune is inviting all grade one and two students to sing in Spanish at Arts Night. If your child is going to participate in this optional activity please bring them to the Media Center for 5:45pm on Friday. 


   Just a friendly reminder that there is a school wide Lenten Service Project that has been featured in our school news. We are collecting items for families that are in temporary housing at local motels. Please check the school new and fliers on stb-school.org for further details. We will be collecting donations in the classroom.


   The children will be bringing home their Book Buddy Bags on Friday, March 23 with a book and 2 book report pages. The children are familiar with discussing the story elements on the pages.  The follow criteria will be used in grading the book reports: completion of all parts including writing and illustrations, neatness in writing, details in illustration, punctuation/ capitals. The students are expected to sound out words and use of memory words is expected to reflect their learning. The Book Buddy Bags with the contents is due on Tuesday, March 27th! 

Moving on to MORE Adventures of the SUPERKIDS!

Dear Family,

Your child’s reading and writing adventures continue as we begin the next level of the

Superkids Reading Program, More Adventures of the Superkids. The goal is to build upon the

skills children have already learned, so reading comes more naturally and independently.

Then they will be able to spend more energy on understanding what they are reading and

expressing their ideas in writing.

In the previous level, Adventures of the Superkids, your child learned that the same

sound can be spelled in different ways, such as the long o sound in no, note, and boat, and

In this level, your child will learn that the same letters can stand for more than one sound,

such as oo in moon and book, and other words that are tricky to read and spell. Children will

use new patterns and rules as well as memorization to read and spell tricky words. 

Your child will continue to bring home a spelling lists of Memory Words, Pattern Words, and trickers

every few weeks to prepare for their spelling test at the end of each week.  Help your child

memorize the spelling of the Memory Words and practice using patterns and rules to spell

the Pattern Words and trickers.

As children’s understanding of words grows, they will be able to read the longer, more

challenging stories about the Superkids in the More Adventures of the Superkids Reader. The

journey to being a “real reader” isn’t easy, but you and your child will be amazed how far

your child will have come by the end of the year.

March News

Hello 1C Families,
   Here are a few notes to keep you informed of what we are up to in 1C!

• 3/6 1C visits the school book fair. Please see the flier sent home with the information regarding the book fair. The children will be visiting the fair 9- 9:30. Please keep in mind that the books are taxed when sending in a payment.
• 3/12 Field Study to see Seussical at Mechanics Hall in Worcester. We will return to school by lunch time. Thank you for indicating that you would like to be a chaperon for this field study. I will post the "winner" once I pull from a hat tomorrow.
• 3/16 is a half day of school. We will be making a green fruit salad to celebrate St. Patrick's Day. Thanks in advance to the HR mom for coordinating this for our class.
• 3/22 Art Show set up day. Mrs. Lapolito is in need of parent volunteers to help set up for the Art Show. If will be available to help out at any time on the 22nd please email Mrs. Lapolito at ART2@stb-school.org .

Happy Valentines Day!

We had the best Valentines Day! Thank you all for the great brunch treats and for sending in the goods for our party. The children had a ball doing fun work all day long. What a joy it was to see them pass out their beloved valentines and to hear the 'thank yous!' It really is one of my most favorite days of the school year.

I'd also like to say a big Thank You to all for the lovely treats, valetines, and surprises! It was a special day for all of us in 1C!

 Our class will be having a Valentines Day party on Tues., 2/14. Thank you to our homeroom parents for coordinating our morning snacks which will be fruit, gluten free muffins, munchkins, and water. Please be sure that your child uses the class list to check that they have written out valentine cards for all of their classmates. The children may bring in a small trinket or treat to pass out. Any candy items will be sent home for you to see. Thank you!

JESUS LOVES US!!

Look at these beautiful faces! We had a wonderful time making these religious valentine projects this morning! The children are very excited to take them home to share with you all!

I have been having lots of fun with the iPhone PicFrame app! It is easy to group pictures and email them or print at home.

100th Day of School!

Yesterday was the 100th day of school! We had a wonderful time doing 100th activities all day long! We drew 100 shapes! We counted money! We added to 100! We read 100 books as a class! Yes! It is true! We made a 100th day glyph project! We even wrote about what we will do when we are 100 years old! I can't wait to see the drawings of what the class thinks that they will look like at 100!

Class Valentine's Day Party! Thank you to our Homeroom Parents for coordinating our "brunch" party. The children may bring in valentines for all of their classmates. If the children bring in small valentine treats they will be sent home for parents to check all ingredients. Thank you!

Just a Reminder...

It's time to replenish some supplies. I'd appreciate it if each child could bring in 2 jumbo sized glue sticks and a small package of washable Crayola chunky markers. Please label the packages with your child's name.

I'd like to have the boys in our class bring in a large box of tissues, and the girls bring in a package of baby wipes. Thank you!

The theme of Catholic Schools Week this year is “Catholic Schools: Faith. Academics. Service.” St. Bernadette School is joining with other Catholic Schools in the Diocese of Worcester to support St. John’s Parish Food for the Poor Program in Service to our community.

The Latest News from 1C

Happy New Year, 1C Families! We are getting back into the swing of things and we are very busy here at school!

SUPERKIDS: In SUPERKIDS we are currently working on silent e endings. We are learning that silent e is strong, quiet, and very powerful! The silent e helps the vowels to have a long vowel sound. I often refer to this as the vowels that say their own name. We are working on unit 7 in the program. Concepts in units 7 and 8 include CVCe words ( consonant vowel consonant silent e) that include singular and plural nouns. Later in these units we will be adding -ed and -ing endings to these words. We are using context clues to explain what happens in stories, recognizing plot, and new vocabulary. We are also recognizing descriptive language, reading with expression, and reading rhythmically. Memory Words for the units are: oh, an, day, good, very, want, boy, two, about, girl, over, before. We are also enjoying seasonal stories, poems, and other books in small reading groups.

Math: In Math We are working on the following concepts: counting coins, symmetry, measuring capacity, ordering/ comparing numbers, and telling time. We will also be measuring lengths using both standard and nonstandard units. We will also be learning about even and odd numbers. For fact practice we are also starting subtracting 2 from numbers.

Science: Our current unit is "Investigating Animals and Their Habitats". We are studying as Zoologists! Vocabulary includes: carnivore, omnivore, herbivore, habitat, mammal, migrate, grasslands, polar, desert, ocean, pond, camouflage. We will be categorizing animals and learning about their characteristics. The children did a wonderful job on their last science journals and they are really taking pride in their work.

Social Studies: This week we are learning about Martin Luther King, Jr. We are learning about his accomplishments and his work to have peace and equality for all. Later this month we will continue our other social studies curriculum about types of maps and communities.

Religion: We are now back in Ordinary Time. Our current unit is Unit 5: God is Our Loving Father. In this unit we are learning about Creation, caring for Creation, and giving thanks to God. In our next chapter we will be learning all about Baptism.
